Three medals and seven diplomas in Olympic Games
The seventy-nine athletes from the High Performance Centre of Sant Cugat who have participated in Rio Olympic Games have won three medals and seven diplomas. Mireia Belmonte, swimming, Olympic champion in 200m butterfly and bronze in the 400 m styles; and Joel Gonzalez, taekwondo, bronze in the category of +68, are the medalists.
Apart from these medals, two fifth positions, of the women’s water polo and synchronized swimming duo formed by Ona Carbonell and Gemma Mengual, who gave Olympic diploma. The men’s water polo team finished seventh. Another diploma was achieved by the swimmer Joan Lluís Pons, eighth at 400 m styles. The two hockey teams also took a diploma.
Beatriz Pascual, eighth in the 20 km walk is also an outstanding athlete, because with this sum three Olympic diplomas in three appearances. Jesús Ángel García, is another important name, because it was his seventh participation in the Games.
Apart from the CAR athletes, there are other, both Spanish and international, who have made some training camps at the Center during this year. Spanish athletes included the Olympic high jump champion, Ruth Beitia and Lidia Valentin, bronze in weightliftin. As for international athletes, a prominent place is for the Chinese synchronized swimming team, with two silver medals, and British heptathlete Jessica Ennis Hill, silver.
Once the Games are over, it is time for the Paralympics, for which there are a dozen CAR athletes classified. These days, some spanins and international teams are preparing for this big date, like the Sweeden table tennis team. The Paralympic Games will begin on September seven. And after that, we have to start working on the way to Tokyo 2,020.
